“Hills Like White Elephants”

Hemingway sets “Hills Like White Elephants” at a train station to highlight the fact that the relationship between the American man and the girl is at the end. Now in the middle of a desolate valley, the station isn’t the last destination but merely a stopping point between Barcelona and Madrid. Travelers, including the characters, must decide where to go and, in this case, whether to go with each other and keep their relationship.

Moreover, the contrast between the white hills and barren valley possibly highlights the comparison between life and death, fertility and sterility, and mirrors the choice the girl has of keeping the baby or aborting it . The girl seems torn between the two places, not only commenting on the landscape of the hills. Also, physically walking to the end of the platform and gazing out at the brown vacant land around the station.

The analogy of comparing hills to white elephants also, show the playing role the girl has. She tells this to her boyfriend to downplay the harsh reality of her true problems and issues, which is her soon coming baby. She puts barriers up in order to stall on the decision she should make of their kid and her place in life. Her boyfriend stands behind her getting the abortion, but backs her up if she doesn’t want to.

This shows people the true harsh struggles of life: moving, choosing to have birth, and relationships. Its compares life to the most biggest, but most gentle creature. This represents the good and the bad of decisions and the turns you have to make in life. Also, gives the consequences being made only by the fate of one choice

Booker T. Washington

Booker T. Washington is formally one of the best-known African Americans in the nineteenth century that helped provide for progress of blacks education. He helped found many programs to enhance African Americans and open their opportunities. Although, the southerner whites battled for the rights of blacks to be denied, people like Washington helped us to overcome. Tuskegee Institute and other black founded colleges are an example of all the achievements blacks have made over time.

The racism given by the whites and the lighter skin blacks (mulattoes) were mere obstacles of the culture, but African Americans could handle it. Most blacks were discriminating other of darker complexion because they were closer to the home tribe (Africans. As the other lighter skin or mixed were lighter being excelled for being closer to the whites. The main issue was for all the blacks to come together to help their people, their race, and country to be a better place for diverse living.

“If that is all you and your race ask, take it (82)”. This quote shows how African Americans given freedom, but not rights (such as being treated equal). The blacks main purpose was to be on the same pedestal as the whites not only gaining their rights. Racism was the main thing that held them back.

“People of color” not “Negroes (85)”. This quote shows progress with African-American culture as them growing as a people and culture. This saying does degrade the blacks but gives them sum type or comfort. Although, they’re not known just people or Americans it shows the blacks they are given sum type of work for their growth.

Learning to Read and Write

This story is about Fredrick Douglas’ mistress’s life. The purpose of this story was to show that Blacks are as equal as whites. It tells so this mistress generosity towards the less granted. It takes place in slavery times in when slaves were trying to self-teach them selves. Slavery helped bring the servants to higher spiritual and mental being.

“She was an apt woman; and little experience soon demonstrated, to he satisfaction (Douglas 100)”. This quote displays how well mannered slaves were. It didn’t matter about education she still can keep her self up. She was able to “little experience” showed how women had equality like men care giving.

“Making friends of all the little white boys whom I met in the street (Douglas101)”. This quote shows how blacks try to relate with other races. This is an attempt to fit in with society. “White boys” is used as being superiority over all others.
Douglas tells reader how crucial it was for getting alone with whites and why the blacks strived so hard.

“You will be free as soon as you are 21,but I am a slave for life (Douglas101)”. This shows how promises were made for freedom towards the slaves and how enlightened them. Also, reveals how slavery held in the South into adulthood. Slaves were held from birth to prolonged life. It shows how efforts for freedom from slaves transferred.

The Black Belt

Slave trade is south: Louisiana, Georgia, Mississippi, and Atlanta. The reproduction of the slaves made population high in the south given them more profit. The whites in the south were notorious for having many slaves and considered poor when having none. The North was known as the place for blacks freedom, but the journey was dangerous.

The Underground Railroad played the role as journey to freedom. The blacks women playing the mother for their master sand their own children was a new job given to slaves. Also, to some to even breast-feed their newborns and youth. Children that were taken care of by the blacks were confused to be kind or evil to their caretakers. Although, soon they would be the owners of their caretakers and their children the destiny.

Blacks were down played, but most success of white people is owned and should be accolades to them. They played workers, housekeeper, maid, and even mistress to some of the masters. Who should be given the shine and glory? The whites who are the takers of the accolades or the people who do the hard work for nothing to gain, but to spare a beating.

African Americans deserve to be placed right aside the whites with their awards and acknowledgement. They have paid the price and work to be able to achieve what ever their heart desires.

The Souls of Black Folk

1). Du Bois begins forethought declaring “the problem of the Twentieth Century is the problem of the color-line (894[full ed.]). This statement he reveals that the only thing that separating the black and white is their skin? Skin, which shouldn’t be the barrier between the two getting along and working among each other. This is a fact because you can’t change your color. Also, the significance of this quote is that it shows the fire to the flame of racism, which is discrimination and segregation.

“How does it feel to be a problem?” The quote tells that being black was a problem in the 1900s. It states him as an individual being part of the dispute of racism. Also, it clearly recognizes the fight over white superiority. It’s putting the burden and issue of a whole weight on one’s shoulder to make him feel as he’s doing something wrong.

Du Bois elaborative ways to use problem as a solution and as decoding himself shows his true creativity. It shows his ways to intertwine his pathos and logic. Also, he changing problem from being the whole black race toward being himself as an individual. If any Du Bois helped the to solve the problem of racism.

2). Du Bois realize his white classmate reaction to him he tells of the “vast veil”.” I held all beyond [the veil] in common contempt, and lived above in it a region of blue sky and great wandering shadows…”(896[full ed.]). This quote explains that “vast veil” is the farthest a black person can go with out getting held back because of skin color. He used “fine contempt” by not saying or complaining as a way to get by in the “white world”. Spoken word is what everyone is held to and he should be able to be opinionated without being ridiculed.

Dubois used his personal experiences to show how racism and discrimination affected him. He uses his emotions to show pain for racism and to give the reader sympathy upon the subject. Bois being content about his opinion lead to outburst and deranged mood swings. This all resulted from held in anger.

Its purpose of persuading people to feel black suffering and pain. Also, to live in the eyes of their ancestors to know deep hatred of the “colored race”. In a way it will give more respect to your elders and let the black youth know how much better they have it.

Extra Credit

4). Du Bois uses the “sorrow songs” in order to show the suffer of the black race. Also, it shows how they used to cope with their treatment. These songs helped them come above their obstacles and forget about their situation for time being. It also, tells of their newfound happiness and being equal now to the whites with their rights.

“Some echo of haunting melody from the only American music which welled up from black souls in the dark past”(895[full ed.]). This quote shows how the music the black have made is now listened to reveal their achievements not as to show what blacks were, but what they are now. It helps build and give them strength that if they came this far they came go above and beyond.

Of the meaning of progress

“White folks would get it all”. This is an example of the differences between the whites and blacks still having problems with finances. The whites having the American family, nice house, and job of which only blacks at this time and now could wish for. This gave the blacks want for opportunities of having higher paying jobs.
The fact that whites had a hundred acres and a mule overcoming the blacks without a doubt. The whites having an American culture and being the common race gave them better opportunities. The blacks had to excel highly to get a high position and still placed under the white people. The glass ceiling case of women only getting so high in high positions until they can’t getting any higher on the ladder.

The struggles of black folk and people are remarkable. They have come from being the servants of whites to know working side by side with them. It took many years for them to come this far and its incredible thanks to the 13th Amendment blacks are free. The other rights given them citizenship and voting rights to be know as an individual and not less a person.
