Edgar Allen Poe wrote this piece to demonstrate a young boys curiosity. He gives descriptive setting of a so-called “haunted house”. It embraces the fear of the curious mind and endeavors. Simultaneously, it reveals the dreams and most found memory of your deepest fear and want intertwined.
His details such as “upon blank walls” and “vacant eye-like windows” show the mystery of the mansion. The words are used to give despicable and unsuspicious tone. Also, he uses examples of giving mysterious tone to a horse like “lurid tarn”. Roderick Usher the owner of the mansion with a sickness has to stay in the house. This makes him housebound and afraid of the outside world.
“Gothic archway of the hall (Poe 277)”. It shows that the place has a dreary mood and dark position. “I met the physician...the valet now threw open a door and ushered me into…(Poe 227)”. The quote reveals that wealth of the people by them being able to afford maintenances. This shows that Usher has many riches with beauty of artistry.
“Roderick Usher” being repetition shows the importance and significance. It reveals that notorious of him and his family. “In some struggle with the grim phantasm, FEAR (280)”. This quote shows that Usher lives with a disease and I scared of the outside world. He knows how safety is in the house and not outside.
