This story is about Fredrick Douglas’ mistress’s life. The purpose of this story was to show that Blacks are as equal as whites. It tells so this mistress generosity towards the less granted. It takes place in slavery times in when slaves were trying to self-teach them selves. Slavery helped bring the servants to higher spiritual and mental being.
“She was an apt woman; and little experience soon demonstrated, to he satisfaction (Douglas 100)”. This quote displays how well mannered slaves were. It didn’t matter about education she still can keep her self up. She was able to “little experience” showed how women had equality like men care giving.
“Making friends of all the little white boys whom I met in the street (Douglas101)”. This quote shows how blacks try to relate with other races. This is an attempt to fit in with society. “White boys” is used as being superiority over all others.
Douglas tells reader how crucial it was for getting alone with whites and why the blacks strived so hard.
“You will be free as soon as you are 21,but I am a slave for life (Douglas101)”. This shows how promises were made for freedom towards the slaves and how enlightened them. Also, reveals how slavery held in the South into adulthood. Slaves were held from birth to prolonged life. It shows how efforts for freedom from slaves transferred.
