Huswifery(Edward taylor)

“ Huswifey”


Huswifery by Edward Taylor is a puritan poet that reflected his effects by religious beliefs through his writing. Similes and figurative are used to get his point. His technique of writing relating objects of no similarities to describe his relationship with Christ. Also, to show how he wants to be draw near.

“And make my Soule holy Spoole to bee (Taylor3)”. This quote states that he wants to be made up in holiness like the Lord. He wants the Lord to shape him to be as he should when walking in his image. He uses diction such as “Spoole” making such a simple object has worthiness to not became overbearing with the church. Taylor’s dedication to the Lord helps to show his true fellowship and will.

“Make me thy then, knit therein this Twine…And make the Holy Spirit, Lord, winde quills (Taylor7)”. He uses diction such as “knit” to reveal how he wants God to establish in his life. Also, that wants to not only speak as a prophet, but be seen as one (visible and physically). In other words he want his holiness to be shown to the people. Since, this he decided to take actions to do so.


“Affections, Judgment, Conscience, Memory; My Words and Actions, that their shine may fill (Taylor16)”. This quotes states that Taylor wants to show his spirituality through all his actions and through out the day. He doesn’t want to be so much in a sense a hypocrite, but demonstrate them. He does more for the living being of God and not for his being. He does this to be his an example for all the Puritans.
