Phillis Wheatley, a slave that elevated to a famous literary poet throughout the
18th century. She lived with her family, but left to Boston with the inspiring dream of having more education and intellectuality. Although, she lost closest relatives she still managed to never give up on her dreams .She contributed many poems that were recommended by Benjamin Franklin and other prodigies. She has been known as one of the most inspiring people of her time.
“Twas mercy brought me from my pagan land (Wheatley 1767 line 1)”. This quote shows how Wheatley acknowledges God “mercy” of bringing her from here “pagan land”. This reveals that it was a blessing that she was taken from here home and brought to a place to make better of her self. She wants to do good for others. Also, make a change in the occurring generation.
“Some view our race, with a scornful eye (Wheatley 1767 line5)”. The quote shows that racism and hatred towards African Americans in this age. They were mostly peered upon as insignificant and useless. Wheatley proved this view upon us African Americans inaccurate. She moved a block that we had and tried to overcome for centuries.
“Their color is a diabolic dye (Wheatley 1767 line)”. This quote means that the of blacks’ skin (brown) were known as being threatening. Also, it means that they were sometimes abused even killed because of their complexion. This became a really huge issue in the south leading to such incidents as lynching(hanging).
